Things to Do: Santa Sangre and The Shining at...
Whoa, double whammy time! Tonight Santa Sangre and The Shining are playing at Midnight. I’m too much of a chicken shit to see The Shining on the big screen cause the lady in the tub is a brain stain that I just cannot handle. But you should do it.
Santa Sangre is playing at Sunshine at 12:15 and The Shining is at IFC Center at 11:55.

BONUS: Pumping Iron (1977)
Not sure if it’s the acid yellow or the empowering infomercial like quote but I love this poster.

The Endless Summer (1966): Oh Mama, I Wanna Go...
I think it’s safe to say that here in New York, surfers are the new skaters. With growing numbers of amateurs pouring their pale bodies into wetsuits every weekend, designer neoprene bikinis and a successful surf outpost in Soho, it’s a bona fide trend. For us girls I imagine it’s far less embarrassing to ask a dude to teach you how to surf than to attempt a sloppy kickflip while wearing those...

Lola Rennt/Run Lola Run (1998): Get Money.
It begins with a frantic phone call that acts as the starting pistol in a race against the clock. Lola is player one in the video game like premise of Run Lola Run. She’s got twenty minutes to help her boyfriend Manni, a small time crook replace 100,000 German marks of his boss’ money. Her love for Manni is pertinent as she runs determined through the streets of Berlin in a pair of Doc...

Best of Netflix Watch Instantly: Empire Records...
In the ever growing list of things that were awesome about the nineties I would like to add Empire Records. It captures a moment in time and an endangered species: independent record shops. Do you remember record shops? A lil’ tumble weed probably just rolled by your iPod. I remember saving up my money and riding my bike to Tower Records to buy Slaughter’s Stick It to Ya on cassette. I...
P.S. Seeing a horror movie with a rowdy crowd at Union Square never gets old....

Alejandro Jodorowsky's Santa Sangre (1989): Put...
Santa Sangre is Alejandro Jodorowsky’s version of a horror fairy tale, smeared with clown makeup and tied with a sequin bow. It could just be my observation but something about this film reeks of 80s cocaine and excess: kind of like Macho Man Randy Savage or the fact that Don Johnson thought he should record this song. If you’ve seen a Jodorowsky film (The Holy Mountain, El Topo) you...

Shoutouts: ION Magazine Issue#70
Some love from Canada! Excited to be featured in this month’s ION magazine. Read about my silent protest against Titanic, my favorite feel good movie Jesus Christ Superstar and my appreciation for Ikea hot dogs. Many thanks to Douglas Haddow: writer, pop culture anthropologist and awesome dude. Check out the article here and view the issue here.

The Miss Piggy Calendar: Annie Hall (1982)
From the 1982 Miss Piggy calendar where she and Kermy take on Great Lovers of the Silver Screen. I don’t think there’s a man or frog any cuter that could play Woody Allen. (via)

Things to Do: De Palma Suspense at BAM 4/8 - 4/20
Starting today BAM will be hosting a two week series dedicated to the thrillers of director Brian De Palma. While many find Al Pacino snorting a mountain of cocaine before being riddled with bullets as his greatest film achievement, I can appreciate the earlier less gangsta De Palma. Sorry Biggie. The series consists of ten films handpicked by director Noah Baumbach (director of The Squid and...

Death Race 2000 (1975): In for the Kill.
In the game of Deathrace, it’s not just how fast you reach the finish line but how many civilians you clip along the way. It takes more skill than running down a fat lady lugging her groceries or a texting jaywalker, there’s a point system. Everyone is a target with babies bringing in seventy points and at the top are the elderly, who command a whopping one hundred point score! So...

Best of Netflix Watch Instantly: RoboCop (1987)
HO-LEE SHIT. RoboCop is so much better than I remember. I knew I was in for a treat early on when a robo-prototype kills a guy during a demonstration. He locks him in his crosshairs as engineers frantically grab at wires and buttons trying to cut the power. But before they can stop him the metal monster lays some fifty rounds on the guy, blowing him to bits as a boardroom full of people look on...

BONUS: Torso (1973)
Love these chubby saw letters. Also, take note of the message in the lower right hand corner: Now what kind of asshole would show up only for the last 10 minutes of a film?! Seriously.

See this Film: Bill Cunningham New York (2010)
Bill Cunningham New York is a inspiring documentary about the photographer behind the popular New York Times On the Street style column. Given the subject matter it could have been a niche film, only catering to those who luuuuvvvvv fashuunn (fashionista voice) and pride themselves on memorizing designer catwalks, fashion editors, and the latest “it” handbag. But it’s much more than that. A peek...
