Myra Breckinridge is a film based Gore Vidal’s 1968 satirical novel of the same title. Its a film that I found somewhere on a “worst films ever made” list but I thought I’d give it a chance. Hey, I enjoy a challenge! Well I’m hear to tell you that it IS one of the worst films ever made. It’s also illustrates the fact that not every book needs to be turned into a film. Yeah, I’m looking at you Nicholas Sparks.
New York Observer film critic and one time thespian Rex Reed stars as Myron who after a sex change becomes Myra played oh so campily by vixen Raquel Welch. After the operation, we find Myra in Hollywood attempting to blackmail her uncle out of half of his estate which he/she feels entitled to. The rest of the story is not important. As lovely as she is, Raquel Welch was helpless in trying saving this film; and poor Mae West, you almost feel sorry for her when you hear the lines she has to deliver. It’s sad. A small consolation prize was the film’s opening title sequence. This loose script is pretty gorgeous, so I guess it’s got that going for it.
