Godard is coming closer and closer to sainthood with every film I watch. Even when the plot is silly or non-existent (see: Made in U.S.A.) or the film is boring (see: Masculin Féminin) or pretentious (see: Weekend or Le Mépris), they are always beautiful. The man has an eye for color and for creating inspiring images. This film is Godard’s ode to the American musical comedy. It is not really a musical or a comedy, its more of a rom-com-ical (a romantic comedy with random musical numbers, clever i know). If only TBS would play this kind of rom-com instead of one starring stony Matthew McConaughey!
Angela (Anna Karina) is a woman who decides she wants to get knocked up, but her stubborn boyfriend Emile is not ready. Making matters more complicated, his best friend Alfred (Heartthrob Jean-Paul Belmondo) claims to be in love with her. OK, so let’s stop here for a second: This. does. not. happen. At least not to most people, but Anna Karina is a buh huh babe and this is a rom-com so, we’ll let it slide. Anyways, after bringing up the baby subject to no avail Emile suggests (jokingly) that she have one with Alfred. He’s of course jealous when she accepts. But, I don’t even need to tell you that there’s a happy ending to this story.*

Jean-Paul Belmondo, I’ve got a time machine waiting for us when you’re ready.
