More that fifty films down, so many more to come. Here in no particular order are my ten favorite posts so far… C’mon, who doesn’t like a top ten list?! I even included some new stills. So sit back, crack a Bud tallboy and enjoy! (Click on the titles to view have your mind blown by the original posts) Please note: I didn’t intend for this to become an (Ooooh) Ladies First list, it just kinda happened.
Christiane F. (1981)
Why it’s good: If you’re like me, you like drug related movies. The ones where everyone hits rock bottom but still manages to look really good before eventually overdosing in an very dramatic scene set to good music. Maybe I’m a masochist but it really is a great movie.
Should you see it? Yes. There’s a cool concert scene starring DAVID BOWIE.
They Shoot Horses Don’t They? (1969)
Why it’s good: Jane Fonda is equal parts attitude and vulnerability in this film about a depression era dance marathon. The story is interesting and sad; and the cast of characters are all desperate and affecting. I also recommend the book which is equally amazing.
Should you see it? Yes. Thank me later.
Who are you Polly Magoo? (1966)
Why it’s good: Directed by a former Vogue photographer there’s tons of stylish shots in this fashion industry satire. Dorothy McGowan has that quirky yet strikingly beautiful quality that only real models have. Stay for the closing credits, there are some really inspiring illustrations.
Should you see it? Yes, especially if you are a creative person. If you live in New York City, some of the costumes from the film are on exhibit at the MET until August 9th. Don’t sleep.
Sssssss (1973)
Why it’s good ridiculous: It just goes there: the acting is a joke, the special effects and “snake-man” makeup suck, the story is ridonkulous but it doesn’t care. I guess I was blown away by it’s commitment. I mean the the title alone is laughable.
Should you see it? : NO, because then you’ll be mad at me and I don’t want that… I accept the fact that I’m a total freak for enjoying this movie.
Paris is Burning (1990)
Why it’s good: Whether you’re a big ole queen or a total dude there’s no way you won’t be charmed by the characters in this film. They’re clever, crass, crazy, loud, and most of all human. I guarantee you’ll be think of more than one way to use “executive realness” in a sentence. Just don’t try to steal my idea of printing it on a coffee mug or I’ll cut you.
Should you see it? : Guuurrrl, and you know this! (Please note: I’m snapping my fingers and popping my neck right now).
The Panic in Needle Park (1971)
Why it’s good: Al Pacino before he was “Hooh Haa” Al Pacino. New York City before it was cleaned up. Kitty Winn committing to her craft before actresses were worried about unattractive or nude pictures of themselves showing up on the web. And of course drugs (!!!) Spoiler alert: a puppy dies (sad face).
Should you see it? : Definitely, it’s a classic.
Une Femme est Une Femme (1961)
Why it’s good: Most people (including my hero) consider this film a failure by Godard standards but I really enjoyed it. Considering it’s one of his first films, I think it demonstrates his potential and the beginning of certain stylistic points he continues to use throughout his career. And of course, it stars Jean Paul Belmondo and Anna Karina.
Should you see it? I think so, but I could be wrong.
White Dog (1981)
Why it’s good: I have a big soft spot in my heart for Paul Winfield so maybe that’s what sold me on this one. Or maybe it was Kristy Mcnichol’s fluffy eighties substitute teacher haircut, or the fact that it tried to be so heavy handed and serious but made me laugh out loud more than once. I don’t know, I just liked it.
Should you see it?: Maybe. You’ll either love it or hate it.
Thriller: A Cruel Picture (1974)
Why it’s good: Once you see this film, you kinda realize that Tarantino “borrows” pretty heavily from the past. Frigga (Gorgeous Christina Linberg) goes from pathetic victim to cold blooded killer all while cordinating her eye patches to match her outfits. P.s. S-L-O-W. M-O-T-I-O-N. F-I-G-H-T-I-N-G!?
Should you see it?: Yes, but close your eyes during the scary sex scenes.
La Passion de Jeanne D’ Arc (1929)
Why it’s good: There’s something to be said about an emotional film that has no dialogue. This movie is serious and a little heavy but it’s worth your time. Plus it’s got an amazing backstory about how the original copy of the film was destroyed and a second copy found some 53 years later. You can’t make this shit up!?
Should you see it? Yes, it’s a great study in the effectiveness of a closeup.
See you at 100 people!
