I first saw Made in U.S.A. at the film forum earlier this Spring. It was one of those tender New York moments when you’re on a date with the city and decide to see a movie at 2pm with the elderly and or the unemployed crowd. Good-times! For some reason, I couldn’t remember if I liked it so I recently re-watched it. About twenty minutes in I realized I did not like this film then and I probably wasn’t going to enjoy it now. This is such a shitty feeling, kind of like when you make pasta only to realize after eating it that the sauce you just used had hairy mold growing inside. True story.
Anna Karina plays a woman turned detective investigating her lovers death in Atlantic-Cité. I learned this from IMDB because I found this movie sooo hard to follow But I always try to find a silver lining. What I gathered was an inspirational color palette, good use of music (including a cameo by Marianne Faithful), great sets and back drops, and a tongue in cheek titling sequence. I’m gonna give him the benefit of a doubt because I’ve read that Godard was simultaneously filming Two or Three Things I know about Her at the time. Who knows, maybe the guy just wasn’t a great multi-tasker.
