You know you’re in for some good stuff when a film has an opening theme called “Stay Gold” sung by Stevie Wonder. And who ISN’T in this movie?! Talk about ensemble cast: Swayze, Rob Lowe, Ralph Macchio, Emilio Estevez, C. Thomas Howell, Matt Dillon, Tom Cruise (God, I hate this guy so much), Leif Garrett and Diane Lane. The story follows the tensions between the rich kid “Socs” and the poor white trash “Greasers”. They run into each other at the drive in, and at the playground, at the Dairy Queen, and things are always about to pop off!

In the midst of all of this testosterone and teen angst, a few of the greasers become accidental heroes while saving some rug-rats from a fire. Unfortunately Johnny gets caught inside the blaze and becomes a bit of a crispy critter while Ponyboy (C. Thomas Howell) begins some method acting research for his role in Soul Man. In the end all of the Greasers and Socs gather for an epic muddy battle, some fighting for fallen soldier Johnny’s honor while others fight for Ralph Lauren. In the end the boys learn the pains of growing up and one of the final lines “Stay Gold, Ponyboy, Stay Gold” is the stuff of legends. Classic Coppola!
