From the opening credits of the Warriors you just want to cheer… or maybe vandalize something. The now iconic drippy graffiti titling just brings back sooo many good memories. The Warriors are a tough Brooklyn gang: they bravely wear possible nipple chaffing leather vests without shirts for Christ’s sake!? And after being framed for the murder of Cyrus the velvet bathrobe wearing leader of the New York City gang circuit they have to fight their way back to Coney Island. With every gang in town on their ass, and that sassy lady from where in the world is Carmen Sandiego? tracking their every move, it’s gonna be a looong night.
This movie makes me love my city so much: the shot of a completely bombed subway car pulling into the Stillwell Ave. station, the fact that there used to be amusements in the subway like pinball machines and those creepy fortune telling machines (!!!), the beautiful but ultimately confusing Massimo Vignelli subway map that leads our guys to freedom, showing how sketchy/amazing Coney Island is, and the many fashionably coordinated gangs (see 90’s crew on Broadway). It’s all perfect?! Add to it one of the most memorable quotes in film: “Warriors… Come out to plaayyeeee” and you’ve got yourself a classic. If you haven’t seen this movie, what the hell are you doing with yourself!? Seriously.
