You could almost categorize skateboarding as a rags to riches story. Or maybe more accurately, a rags to Ryan (Sheckler) story. It began simply enough: a piece of wood, four wheels, and your imagination. And before the Gatorade deals, that ridiculous Secret ad, the reality shows, and a million mall grabs, the scene had it’s own heros. Skateboarding’s best gathered at contests to get some recognition, see the newest tricks and maybe scope a few Bettys. Though riddled with eighties cheesiness and clichés, Thrashin’ captures a great moment in skateboarding’s past. The first thing I thought was “Look at the size of those fucking boards!”Thrashin’ had me from the start with a theme song by MEAT LOAF (!!!) Josh Brolin, and cameos from some truly epic dudes: The Red Hot Chili Peppers, Christian Hosoi channeling his best Rufio (!), Tony Alva, Lance Mountain (a personal fave), Steve Olson, Steve Caballero, a very young Tony Hawk, and who could forget Eddie Reategui. Can someone teach me how to do an acid drop off of a car? Hot. Reckless. Totally Insane.

Do yourself a favor and watch it a second time with the commentary. so funny.
