It’s always interesting revisiting a movie that you haven’t seen in sixteen years (!!!) Of course I knew King of New York was going to dated but it was definitely a bit cheesier than I remember (I’m looking at you Larry Fishburne). Another thing that struck me was how weird it was seeing David Caruso without sunglasses or mumbling a one liner. Well unless you count “Hey, scumbag, guess what? You’re under a-fuckin’-rrest!” as a one liner… And Wesley Snipes, you’ll always be Blade to me!
For the most part KONY is your classic gangster/drug lord movie. Frank White (Christopher Walken) returns from a stint in Sing Sing to reclaim his throne. Ferrara tries to sugar coat the violent subject matter a little with a Robin Hood story line about White’s attempts (however corrupt) to save a flailing South Bronx Hospital. (Queue glitzy Freddie Jackson hosted Fundraiser!). But let’s just be honest this movie is NOT about saving the community, it’s about Christopher Walken, gritty New York, shootouts, corrupt cops and Hip Hop before auto-tune.
