I am a big fan of the less is more approach when it comes to horror films*; And I’m always appreciative of one that can capture the “shit hitting the fan out of nowhere” scenario without overdoing it. My favorite scenes in these kind of films is the inevitable moment when a delirious person screams in a shrill voice “Why is this happening?!” and a more rational person grabs them by the shoulders, shakes them violently, and responds with something like “Get a hold of yourself!!!!”. I revel in these moments.
What sets NOTLD apart is the simplicity in the approach and ultimately the execution. There’s not much gore, and since it’s shot and black and white you don’t even get a true sense of the bloodiness. It’s also interesting that given the openness of the fields of the rural Pennsylvania backdrop, you would think you would feel safe… Yet when filled with flesh hungry zombies you kinda wish you had some place to hide. I would love to see this at a Drive-In theater!

*Don’t tell anyone but I LOVED My Bloody Valentine 3-D!
