Starting today BAM will be hosting a two week series dedicated to the thrillers of director Brian De Palma. While many find Al Pacino snorting a mountain of cocaine before being riddled with bullets as his greatest film achievement, I can appreciate the earlier less gangsta De Palma. Sorry Biggie. The series consists of ten films handpicked by director Noah Baumbach (director of The Squid and the Whale, writer of The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou). Of the ten I am most psyched to see Phantom of the Paradise, De Palma’s rock opera crazy fest inspired by Phantom of the Opera and my absolute favorite Stephen King’s Carrie. Even if you were a cool kid during that awkward stage of adolescence you’ll wanna cheer when Carrie starts locking those gymnasium doors… with her mind! His films are stylish, colorful and always with a sense of dark humor. They are made to be seen on the big screen. If you only know De Palma by way of a pre-Xenu Tom Cruise in Mission Impossible or Nic Cage being well, all Nic Cagey in Snake Eyes this is a great introduction and palette cleanser.
Friday April 8th – Sisters (7:30 show Introduced by Noah Baumbach)
