I finally saw Pretty in Pink for the first time in early ‘96 during my personal boycott of the movie Dunston Checks In. It was also during a time when my day job consisted of answering phones and taking reservations at a Rhythm and Blues Club. I spent most shifts alone with 63 sticky menus, a small stage, and a few concert DVD’s. One was an Earth Wind & Fire show from 1981 (yes!). The second was some especially depressing Teddy Pendergrass footage (post paralyzing accident); And the third was special: Otis Redding live. On particularly slow days I would play this DVD so loud, bopping around and doing my best impression of Duckie lip synching Try a Little Tenderness to everyone and no one. That is… until I was interrupted by a delivery guy. Record skips. “Hey uh can you sign this invoice for me?” Sure. Then the door would close again. I’d turn the music back up, and for a moment it was just Otis and me.
